It was showing high vibration levels of 10mm/sec RMS at a frequency of 100Hz. The motor runs close to 50Hz so he collected a high resolution spectrum to confirm the problem was electrical related and not 2xRPM. He confirmed it was electrical at 100Hz (2XLF) so decided to visualize with MA Camera. The MA video below clearly shows the motor dipping down to the right side. This has all the hallmarks of a machine soft foot problem and probably the root cause of the high 100Hz vibration due to the motor frame twisting. The motor is now planned in for the next shutdown to rectify this problem. - [Are you inspecting bearing defects to identify root cause?](https://rms-reliability.com/reliability/are-you-inspecting-bearing-defects-to-identify-root-cause/): Identifying a bearing defect using vibration analysis is not going to improve plant reliability. Closer inspection found two vertical stiffening bars missing! Must have not been replaced after previous motor removal. We are confident with these replaced and alignment checked, the vibration will be reduced." — Stuart Walker - [Visualising High-Speed Fan Issues with the IRIS MX Camera](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/visualising-high-speed-fan-issues-with-the-iris-mx-camera/): "Working with a client recently, they had a history of reliability problems on a high-speed fan (6000 RPM / 100Hz). Levels were 5-7 mm/sec RMS on the motor. They suspected the base was an issue but wanted to use Motion Amplification to visualize how the motor and structure were actually moving. - [Implementing Motion Amplification in Your Reliability Strategies – Free Webinar](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/implementing-motion-amplification-in-your-reliability-strategies-free-webinar/): "This webinar is a great opportunity to see how Motion Amplification can be implemented in your Condition Monitoring, Maintenance, and Reliability Strategies. Really looking forward to it, we have some great guests . - [New Features in Motion Amplification v3.0 Update](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/new-features-in-motion-amplification-v3-0-update/): "Latest Motion Amplification update video for v3.0 of RDI Technologies Inc. There is often more to raised 1XRPM levels than unbalance and misalignment. The pump is now planned to be moved, re-aligned, and have a new base fitted, which will improve the reliability of this asset. - [Real-World Example of Resonance Amplifying Vibration Levels on a Mixer Drive](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/real-world-example-of-resonance-amplifying-vibration-levels-on-a-mixer-drive/): "Nice real-world example of how resonance can significantly amplify vibration levels on plant assets. Levels were around 50mm/sec on this mixer drive until I temporarily stiffened the structure, which increased its natural frequency away from the 25Hz excitation force. Levels dropped to 10 mm/sec. Time to add the missing bolts! Shot using v3.2 IRIS M software and colour camera onsite live mode." — Stuart Walker - [Uncovering Issues in a Paper Machine Drive with the IRIS M Camera](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/uncovering-issues-in-a-paper-machine-drive-with-the-iris-m-camera/): "A great example of the detail you can see with the IRIS M Motion Amplification Camera. Some MA videos, like this one of a paper machine drive, make the problem look so obvious, but without the camera, it's a different story. - [Visualizing Stress on Coupling and Bearings with Motion Amplification Camera](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/visualizing-stress-on-coupling-and-bearings-with-motion-amplification-camera/): "Looking forward to doing a follow-up on this pump with the Motion Amplification Iris M Camera shortly. The saying "a picture (or video in this case) speaks a thousand words" is so true with MA technology. You can almost visualize the amount of stress the coupling and bearings must be under. Levels were 8mm/sec RMS on the motor at 980 RPM." — Stuart Walker - [Motion Amplification Technology Now Available in Full Colour](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/motion-amplification-technology-now-available-in-full-colour/): "Amazing development with the game-changing Motion Amplification Technology by RDI Technologies Inc.—Colour MA! At Reliability Maintenance Solutions Ltd, we feel privileged to work closely with such a great company and team. Watch out for more updates this month; this is just one of many new cutting-edge developments coming from the team at RDI Technologies." — Stuart Walker - [Dispelling Myths: Motion Amplification and Healthy Machines](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/dispelling-myths-motion-amplification-and-healthy-machines/): "Q: Doesn't Motion Amplification just make healthy machines look bad? I get asked this question a lot onsite, so I thought I would make a short video showing why this is not the case. As well as being an effective communication tool, one of the key benefits of MA is that if vibration levels are low, and I am talking general rotating plant here, we will see limited motion in the footage as we amplify the data. Yes, the Iris M camera is capable of accurate measurements down to less than 1 micron, but I am talking visually here. - [Successful Fan Investigation with ROI Trigger on Inlet Ductwork](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/successful-fan-investigation-with-roi-trigger-on-inlet-ductwork/): In this case, we used a visual ROI trigger on the inlet ductwork; if it saw more than 1500 microns in the X direction, it would store the data. Worked a treat . Lots of other triggering options are available, a great add-on kit for the existing IRIS M system." — Stuart Walker - [Addressing Rotor Unbalance to Improve Bearing Life and Structural Integrity](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/addressing-rotor-unbalance-to-improve-bearing-life-and-structural-integrity/): "Nice real-world example of how rotor unbalance reduces bearing life and stresses the structure. This Motion Amplification shot using our IRIS M camera shows a direct drive fan running at 2980 RPM with a vibration reading of 11mm/sec RMS at 1XRPM. Nothing is loose; it's just the force of the unbalance flexing the structure. It's not surprising, as I have seen fans running over 50mm/sec RMS quickly develop structural cracks. This fan needs a clean and re-balance, which should bring it down to around 1mm/sec RMS and improve its long-term reliability." — Stuart Walker - [Exploring Dyno Bearing Issues with Tach Sync and Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/exploring-dyno-bearing-issues-with-tach-sync-and-motion-amplification/): "It's great to be involved in using the latest cutting-edge technology. We are starting to see some unique data never seen before. Following on from last week's post with the dyno bearing problem, here is a shot using the Tach Sync and Motion Amplification camera. The camera is synced using a Tach pulse to freeze the shaft, in this case running at 33Hz. The rotating component can then be motion amplified, measured, and filtered to any frequencies present, showing only the non-sync vibration as the synchronous vibration is removed. - [Resolving Loose Pump Bolts and Pipework Resonance Issues](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/resolving-loose-pump-bolts-and-pipework-resonance-issues/): "It's great to have the latest Motion Amplification technology where we can see the bigger picture with 2.3 million pixel sensors. I see this problem quite often where structural issues on machines occur at a frequency of 1XRPM. The loose pump bolts seen in this example are often a symptom of another issue rather than the root cause. Tightening them will reduce the levels temporarily until they become loose again! - [Join Us for Visual Vibration Technology Webinar at Week of Webinars](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/join-us-for-visual-vibration-technology-webinar-at-week-of-webinars/): "Really looking forward to UK's 'Week of Webinars' with Mobius Connect next week. Fortunately, it's all planned to be replaced to significantly improve reliability. Footage shot using IRIS M colour camera and software v3.2." — Stuart Walker - [Identifying Poor Base Security, Alignment Issues, and Concrete Base Pad Problems with Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/identifying-poor-base-security-alignment-issues-and-concrete-base-pad-problems-with-motion-amplification/): Great example here of a new pump installation suffering from raised vibration levels to 10mm/sec RMS at 1XRPM. The camera exposed poor base security, alignment issues, and a serious issue with the concrete base pad! If these issues are not corrected, these pumps will suffer from poor reliability for many years to come." — Stuart Walker - [Increasing Base Natural Frequency and Precision Aligning the Pump to Solve Resonance Issues](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/increasing-base-natural-frequency-and-precision-aligning-the-pump-to-solve-resonance-issues/): Here is a great before & after Motion Amplification example of this type of problem. The solution was to increase the natural frequency of the base by stiffening it and precision aligning the pump. Levels dropped from 17mm/sec to 0.5mm/sec RMS—a 95% reduction. Great proactive work by one of our regular sites we work with." — Stuart Walker - [Diagnosing Resonance Issues in Vertical Water Pumps](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/diagnosing-resonance-issues-in-vertical-water-pumps/): "Every troubleshooting vibration problem I seem to look at these days is resonance related. Here is a great Motion Amplification video of a vertical water pump that is running in a resonant condition. Over the last 10-15 years, these types of problems have become a lot more common. A combination of the use of variable speed drives and swapping out old heavy cast motors for lightweight energy-efficient ones, which change the system natural frequency, is a common problem. Some significant stiffening is required on this one to move the natural frequency away from the operating speed range of the pump. - [Exploring the New Modal Amplified System using a Columbian Peacock Bass](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/exploring-the-new-modal-amplified-system-using-a-columbian-peacock-bass/): "Couldn't resist trying the new game-changing Modal Amplified system in the office for the IRIS camera range by RDI Technologies Inc. As well as frequency data from any point of the image, we also get the visual aspect, which is really useful. This is the raw data, but by trimming the video and then filtering to individual frequencies, we can gain even more insight." — Stuart Walker - [Introduction to Modal Analysis with Modal Amplified: Real World Fan Case Study (Part 2)](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/introduction-to-modal-analysis-with-modal-amplified-real-world-fan-case-study-part-2/): "Modal Amplified – An Introduction to Modal Analysis – Real World Fan Case Study (Part 2). - [IRIS M + Tach Sync Technology Helps Resolve ACC Cooling Fan Blade Cracking Issues](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/iris-m-tach-sync-technology-helps-resolve-acc-cooling-fan-blade-cracking-issues/): "We are getting fantastic results with the latest cutting-edge technology from RDI Technologies Inc., the Tach Sync. Following a trial run at one of our regular power plants in the UK, we were asked to model the motion of some ACC cooling fan blades during operation. The site was experiencing significant cracks near the root of the blades and needed to determine if the cracks were due to transient events like gusts of wind or if there was vibration motion on the blades leading to cyclic fatigue failures. - [Enjoy the Motion Amplification Visuals](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/enjoy-the-motion-amplification-visuals/): "No words needed on this one! Perfect problem to get the IRIS M out on. Within 10 minutes, we got the data showing a classic 180-degree out-of-phase motion due to a lack of stiffness on the pump base, plus a host of other issues! A full base redesign is required. Apparently, a new pump was installed which didn't fit the original OEM base, so a new base was manufactured." — Stuart Walker - [Exploring the New Features in Motion Amplification v3.5](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/exploring-the-new-features-in-motion-amplification-v3-5/): "Development continues with the IRIS Motion Amplification platform by RDI Technologies Inc. Love the new spectrum lock waterfall plot feature in v3.5 for transient run-up and coast-down collections. Great for resonance problems like the one shown below. It's amazing we can take a non-contact measurement anywhere on the image and get this amount of detail. At the end of the video, you can see the timeline of development with this system. Well worth keeping your software up to date for all the IRIS platform users out there." — Stuart Walker - [Successful Tach Sync Testing on Power Plant Fan](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/successful-tach-sync-testing-on-power-plant-fan/): "Happy New Year! The natural frequency of the structure is being excited by a nearby machine running at 25Hz. As I stiffen the structure, I move the natural frequency away from the excitation frequency (25Hz), and the vibration level reduces significantly. An easy fix really; the vessel just needs bolting down correctly to increase its stiffness." — Stuart Walker - [Tackling Paper Mill Roll Fatigue with MA and Tach Sync](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/tackling-paper-mill-roll-fatigue-with-ma-and-tach-sync/): Here's a nice example of a large paper mill roll suffering from fatigue cracking around the center flange for many years. The MA Tach sync visualised the problem as the machine was running. A finite element model was created, showing the stress on the flange and recommending an engineered solution. After implementing the solution, we captured an after shot with the Tach sync, which showed no flexing of the flange. Great job by the Reliability team onsite and excellent technology from RDI!" — Stuart Walker - [Leveraging Long-Term Acquisition for Thermal Growth Monitoring](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/leveraging-long-term-acquisition-for-thermal-growth-monitoring/): "Long-term acquisition, or time-lapse as I like to call it, is another great feature we have at our disposal with the Motion Amplification System. A full POV will be available soon with narration on this example, but for now, here is the screen share." — Stuart Walker - [Unveiling Hidden Vibration Issues with Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/unveiling-hidden-vibration-issues-with-motion-amplification/): "Love this Motion Amplification example from some recent MA training. "Those bolts are tight, nothing wrong with the base on this machine" – well, the MA camera tells a different story! No other technology can communicate vibration problems like MA can . - [Tackling Pump Resonance Issues with IRIS M Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/tackling-pump-resonance-issues-with-iris-m-motion-amplification/): "Great example of how destructive resonance problems can be to an asset. This Motion Amplification video taken using an IRIS M camera appears to show the pump has not been bolted down correctly. However, the root cause is actually a resonance problem where the 1XRPM excitation coincides with the natural frequency of the base structure, leading to severe amplification of the vibration levels. - [Successful MA Training Course and Real-world Gearbox Issue Identified](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/successful-ma-training-course-and-real-world-gearbox-issue-identified/): "Very good Motion Amplification training course last week with all the students passing with flying colours . They did really well on their practical tests too. Getting some great results using the Kappa X sensors this time on a critical seal pump. The client is working hard to improve the reliability of these units, which requires OEM input on design as a specialist application. It's fantastic how remotely we can assess and evaluate design changes. With data coming in every minute, we get a very detailed picture of what's going on. - [2 Sensors vs. 2.3 Million: There’s No Competition These Days](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/2-sensors-vs-2-3-million-theres-no-competition-these-days/): These shots are taken in minutes and can be reviewed in the field. Before the MA technology came about, I used cross-channel phase to understand how different parts were moving in relation to each other. Cross-channel uses 2 sensors vs. 2.3 million pixel sensors with MA; there is no competition these days!" — Stuart Walker - [Test Motion Amplification Technology at Your Plant: Introductory Day Offer](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/test-motion-amplification-technology-at-your-plant-introductory-day-offer/): "No words needed on this one! They say a picture is worth a thousand words; well, a Motion Amplification video takes it to another level . If you want to invest in this technology but would like to test it out on your plant first, our MA Technology Introductory Day is a great way to start." — Stuart Walker - [Diagnosing and Solving Resonance Issues in Variable Speed Water Pumps](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/diagnosing-and-solving-resonance-issues-in-variable-speed-water-pumps/): "The significant proportion of vibration troubleshoots I get asked to look at are resonance-related. We have seen an increase in these types of problems over the years as assets are fitted with variable speed drives. So, instead of having, say, a 1X forcing frequency fixed, this can move around depending on process demands, making it more likely to get close to a structural natural frequency. - [Extreme Environment Testing with IRIS M in a Steelmaking Arc Furnace](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/extreme-environment-testing-with-iris-m-in-a-steelmaking-arc-furnace/): "Testing the non-contact capabilities of the Motion Amplification IRIS M camera in an extreme environment, a steelmaking arc furnace ." — Stuart Walker - [Overcoming Challenges to Diagnose Cooling Tower Fan Issues](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/overcoming-challenges-to-diagnose-cooling-tower-fan-issues/): "After 5 years of using RDI Technologies Inc. motion amplification technology and watching its development, it still impresses. I had a cooling tower fan showing increased levels of 1XRPM on the output shaft, which runs at 150 RPM. I suspected an unbalance problem but needed to check the integrity of the structure, as any looseness present could increase the 1X. With water vapour from the fan and difficult access, it was a challenging shot. - [Solving Robot Reliability Issues with Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/solving-robot-reliability-issues-with-motion-amplification/): "Truly remarkable capabilities of using Motion Amplification Technology for transient events in a no-access area. The client was suffering from reliability problems on a robot after a new station was added to the process. The IRIS M camera from RDI Technologies Inc. captured the full process cycle over a long acquisition with 2.3 million vibration sensors. - [Highlights of 2021: Our Favourite Motion Amplification Shots](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/highlights-of-2021-our-favourite-motion-amplification-shots/): "Here are my favourite Motion Amplification shots of 2021 . Just wanted to say thanks to our MA team, and Marketing Paul, for some fantastic work this year. It's been our most hectic Nov/Dec ever as everyone seems to want an MA camera for Christmas as budgets are spent up . At RMS, we love doing our MA proof of concept days on site, so if you are involved with Condition Monitoring, Reliability, vibration analysis, R&D, NVH, get in touch for 2022. - [Verifying Structural Integrity with MA Tach Sync and FEA](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/verifying-structural-integrity-with-ma-tach-sync-and-fea/): "Got to love the Tach Sync from RDI Technologies Inc. A very unique way of motion amplifying rotating components in operation. Here we are verifying the sidewall structure of a large roll that, before modification, suffered some serious cracking issues for 20 years! We have before and after MA Tach data, plus the Finite Element Analysis, which matched the Tach Sync data perfectly. Just wish we had the Modal Amplified tech before the mods were done." — Stuart Walker - [Celebrating Six Years of Motion Amplification Success](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/celebrating-six-years-of-motion-amplification-success/): "It's been six years since RMS got involved with the game-changing Motion Amplification Technology, and it still blows me away the detail we can get from a few MA shots in a short period of time. We have a saying at RMS now, "Just get the camera on it" . - [Innovative Use of Laser Tach Sync with IRIS M for Non-Synchronous Vibration Analysis](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/innovative-use-of-laser-tach-sync-with-iris-m-for-non-synchronous-vibration-analysis/): "One of my favourite addons for the IRIS M Motion Amplification Camera by RDI Technologies Inc. is the Laser Tach Sync. It is used to carry out MA on rotating components. Interestingly, it removes the synchronous component of vibration so we can visualise any non-synchronous vibrations. This might be torsional, flexing, and bending that is non-synchronous. Here are a few clips of testing the technology on a cooling fan before we did a job where they were having some issues with blades cracking. The flexing on the fan blades in this test case was normal." — Stuart Walker - [Client Expands Use of IRIS M Camera to Cover More Assets](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/client-expands-use-of-iris-m-camera-to-cover-more-assets/): "Great to see clients investing in the latest cutting-edge technology. This client has invested in a second IRIS M Motion Amplification system from RDI Technologies Inc., covering a number of sites. I think a third system is on the cards too! In a very short time, they have a much deeper understanding of the vibration of several assets that were exhibiting raised vibration levels. We all know that by reducing the vibration levels on rotating equipment, it will prolong the life of the machine. - [Addressing Pump Vibration and Resonance Issues with Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/addressing-pump-vibration-and-resonance-issues-with-motion-amplification/): "Anyone who uses Motion Amplification technology knows that amazing feeling when you amplify the data and gain insight into the real world of vibration. I knew this was going to be a good one, but it still impressed! - [Testing v3.2 Tach Sync with IRIS M Motion Amplification Camera](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/testing-v3-2-tach-sync-with-iris-m-motion-amplification-camera/): "Great day last week working with Phil Renshaw, testing some cutting-edge technology from RDI Technologies Inc. The v3.2 Tach Sync with the IRIS M Motion Amplification Camera. We can now visualize and measure non-synchronous vibration motion on rotating components at high speed (Tach removes the 1X). In this example of a pump running at 2943RPM (49Hz), we filtered to two different frequencies: 21Hz showing unexpected axial motion and 18.9Hz showing a possible torsional-related rocking motion. - [Industry 4.0 Maintenance Technology Webinar Featuring Motion Amplification Technology](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/industry-4-0-maintenance-technology-webinar-featuring-motion-amplification-technology/): "Great response for next Wednesday's Webinar! There is also a question and answer session at the end." — Stuart Walker - [Reducing Vibration Levels by 86% with IRIS M Motion Amplification Camera](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/reducing-vibration-levels-by-86-with-iris-m-motion-amplification-camera/): "I do love a good before and after shot with the IRIS M Motion Amplification Camera. Nice resonance example here from one of our proactive customers, with the natural frequency of the pump structure at 51Hz very close to the operating speed of 49.8Hz. Raised vibration levels at 1XRPM were evident. Stiffening was applied to the pump support structure to increase the natural frequency away from the 1XRPM excitation, resulting in an 86% reduction in vibration levels!" — Stuart Walker - [Reflecting on the Evolution of the IRIS M Motion Amplification System](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/reflecting-on-the-evolution-of-the-iris-m-motion-amplification-system/): "After the launch of RDI Technologies Inc. v3.0 Software for the IRIS M Motion Amplification system, I thought it was a good idea to recap all the other features that have been added over the last 3 years from v1.0 - v3.0. How time flies! I know the guys at RDI put so much effort into developing this technology. At RMS, we always look forward to future updates because the next one could be another game changer for our industry sector." — Stuart Walker - [Asking the Right Questions: Root Cause Analysis with Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/asking-the-right-questions-root-cause-analysis-with-motion-amplification/): "Over the last 30 years in CBM and Reliability, I have learned the importance of asking questions of the machines and personnel to get to the root cause. In my early years, I would rush to collect the data, thinking the answer would always be in the vibration data. On more complicated reliability issues, you often see a symptom of the problem, not the actual root cause. - [Enhancing Threading Machine Setup with Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/enhancing-threading-machine-setup-with-motion-amplification/): "Had a call to look at a newly installed threading machine that puts magazines together using the IRIS M Motion Amplification technology. A complicated machine with lots going on. Operations felt that the six stations were vibrating differently, which could result in quality issues. Within 10 minutes of arriving, we confirmed that not all positions were acting the same, raising concerns about the setup of the individual positions. Using positions 1 & 2 as the baseline due to the lowest levels of vibration from the data, the other positions will be set up the same to reduce the vibration levels and improve quality. - [Using Robots to Support Engineers in Hazardous Areas](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/using-robots-to-support-engineers-in-hazardous-areas/): "Great to finally meet Spot with Motion Amplification " — Stuart Walker - [Solving Vibration Issues in Gas Compressor Temp Probes with Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/solving-vibration-issues-in-gas-compressor-temp-probes-with-motion-amplification/): A nice example here involves failing temp probes on a large gas compressor. Vibration was the suspected cause, so MA was used to visualize the problem in a poor access area. With vibration (pulsation frequency from compressor 5XRPM) occurring 250 times a second (250Hz), we used our high-speed IRIS MX camera to capture this motion in full HD. We immediately saw why the probes were failing due to the out-of-phase motion with the main discharge pipe. As the vibration was very directional on the pipe, we suspected a resonance problem. - [When to Use the Motion Amplification Camera for Asset Monitoring](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/when-to-use-the-motion-amplification-camera-for-asset-monitoring/): "How do you know when to use the Motion Amplification Camera on an asset? This is a question I get asked a lot. It's usually when we have some raised vibration levels or a re-occurring reliability problem that is not easily solved using basic vibration analysis techniques. Or you may want to use it in the commissioning phase of a new asset. - [Comparing Vibration Data with New Features in MA Software v3.7](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/comparing-vibration-data-with-new-features-in-ma-software-v3-7/): "Perfect timing of the latest release of v3.7 of the Motion Amplification software by RDI Technologies Inc. I had a job come in to compare some MA data from 3 years ago to the current vibration levels on a large structure. v3.7 made the task of aligning previous shots to the live data so much easier. Some great features on the new software, here is a quick video of some of my favourites." — Stuart Walker - [New Features in Motion Amplification Software v3.1: HDR and Motion Vectors](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/new-features-in-motion-amplification-software-v3-1-hdr-and-motion-vectors/): "Two of my favourite new features in the Motion Amplification software v3.1 are HDR (High Density Recording), which gives super smooth detailed videos, and motion vectors, which show the direction of motion. - [Knowing When to Deploy Motion Amplification Technology](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/knowing-when-to-deploy-motion-amplification-technology/): "I often get asked how to know when to deploy the Motion Amplification Technology. Here is a classic example from a routine vibration survey. Standard vibration readings highlighted raised vibration levels at 1XRPM to 8mm/sec RMS vertically on a drive motor. In the past, I would have used cross-channel phase measurements with two sensors to understand the motion. - [Visit Our Motion Amplification Test Rig at Silverstone Analysis & Testing Exhibition](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/visit-our-motion-amplification-test-rig-at-silverstone-analysis-testing-exhibition/): "Loving the Motion Amplification test rig! It's great to be back at face-to-face shows. Hope the team have a good show. If you are involved with Test & Measurement and are at Engineering Integrity Society's Silverstone Analysis & Testing Exhibition today, drop in to see the guys." — Stuart Walker - [Identifying Severe Base Flexing with Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/identifying-severe-base-flexing-with-motion-amplification/): A set of gearbox-driven mono pumps had suffered from poor reliability for several years, mainly related to components on the output shaft, coupling, and bearings. Alignment was good on all the pumps, but they still had problems. Five minutes with the IRIS M camera revealed severe base flexing at the frequency of the output shaft (2Hz), which was the root cause. This flexing stressed the bearings and couplings, leading to failures. Stiffening the base by adding grout in the void area will significantly reduce the flexing and improve long-term reliability on these pumps." — Stuart Walker - [Exploring the New HDR Feature in Motion Amplification Software v3.1](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/exploring-the-new-hdr-feature-in-motion-amplification-software-v3-1/): "Just loving the new HDR feature (High Density Recording) with v3.1 of the Motion Amplification Software from RDI Technologies Inc. Super smooth, detailed MA footage gives you even more visualization to diagnose problems. Here are a few examples with HDR applied." — Stuart Walker - [Motion Amplification Solves Critical Pump Reliability Issues: 96% Reduction in Vibration Levels](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/motion-amplification-solves-critical-pump-reliability-issues-96-reduction-in-vibration-levels/): "It's great to see the Motion Amplification technology providing real value for customers. Here is some excellent work from one of our regular MA users. These critical pumps were suffering from several reliability issues. The IRIS M camera perfectly captured the reason why—poor bases/mounting and alignment issues. - [Scanning Pipework Vibration Problems in the Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Industries](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/scanning-pipework-vibration-problems-in-the-oil-gas-and-petrochemical-industries/): "Motion Amplification is a great scanning tool for addressing pipework vibration problems, especially in the Oil, Gas, and Petrochemical industries. Some of the worst incidents in these industries have been related to pipework failures. With the camera's live Motion Amplification mode, it's an excellent way to survey larger areas of the plant. - [Modal Amplified – An Introduction to Modal Analysis (Part 1)](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/modal-amplified-an-introduction-to-modal-analysis-part-1/): "Modal Amplified – An Introduction to Modal Analysis – Real World Fan Case Study (Part 1). While investigating Dyno bearings, we captured the inner bearing sleeve spinning on the shaft. Excessive fretting was confirmed. This bearing setup is not fit for this application due to the rotational speed and fit tolerance." — Stuart Walker - [Measuring Thermal Growth in Steam Turbine Warmup with Motion Amplification Technology](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/measuring-thermal-growth-in-steam-turbine-warmup-with-motion-amplification-technology/): The latest software v3.1 allows for long-term or time-lapse options. I was keen to test this in a real-world application in a challenging environment. We used a steam turbine warmup, which drives a feed pump, to measure thermal growth over nearly 3 hours, recording an image every 20 seconds. It worked really well, even with some steam affecting the data early on. The data recovered well once the steam reduced. Lots of applications for this new addition to the software." — Stuart Walker - [Thank You for Joining Our Motion Amplification Webinar](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/thank-you-for-joining-our-motion-amplification-webinar/): "Thanks to everyone around the world for joining our Motion Amplification webinar this morning. Here is a perfect example of a robot where we took an acquisition over 2 minutes to capture its full cycle. The non-contact measurement point is on the base, marked with the red box. - [Addressing Sharp Increase in Vibration Levels on a Screen Drive Motor with Resricted Access](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/addressing-sharp-increase-in-vibration-levels-on-a-screen-drive-motor-with-resricted-access/): "We have been using Motion Amplification for over 4 years now and it continues to impress. This is one of my favourite examples so far, as the structure is very complicated and has restricted access. Routine site condition monitoring picked up a sharp increase in vibration levels on a screen drive motor in the vertical direction. Levels were 50mm/sec RMS at the frequency of the screen 14.3 Hz, with the motor running speed at 25Hz. - [Understanding Bearing Defect Frequencies with Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/understanding-bearing-defect-frequencies-with-motion-amplification/): "Are bearing defect frequencies always accompanied by multiple harmonics, high G levels, and impacting? The answer is no. I've only seen it a few times, but it is possible where the first harmonic of the bearing defect is dominant in velocity with low-level harmonics and low G's. This is typically due to the distortion of a raceway or race wear with no spalling, causing high vibration at the Ball Pass Frequency. - [Exploring Key Features of the IRIS Software Update v2.5 with CEO Jeff Hay](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/exploring-key-features-of-the-iris-software-update-v2-5-with-ceo-jeff-hay/): "Well, RDI Technologies Inc. just keeps pushing the boundaries with the Motion Amplification Technology. It's just routine now I get RDI Technologies IRIS M camera on these types of problems; it gives me full visualization of the issue. Straight away, the camera showed the pump holding down bolts are loose. This is not the root cause, though—it's the poorly supported pipework that needs addressing. If we just tighten the base bolts, the problem will come back for sure. - [Inspecting Critical Fan Pulleys and Belts with IRIS M Camera](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/inspecting-critical-fan-pulleys-and-belts-with-iris-m-camera/): "Pulley and belt inspection of a critical fan using the IRIS M Motion Amplification Shaft inspection app. It works really well; you can even see the belts slipping. Here is a chain drive station with no access, shot through a mesh fence. You can clearly see the crack and looseness of the connected bracket. - [Effective Pipework Vibration Correction Using the IRIS MX Camera](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/effective-pipework-vibration-correction-using-the-iris-mx-camera/): "Great corrective work from one of our clients using Motion Amplification. A nice before and after example of a pipework vibration problem. We used the IRIS MX camera to visualize the vibration at the pump pulsation frequency of 246Hz with an Fmax at just over 500Hz. - [Identifying Electrical Issues and Softfoot Problems with Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/identifying-electrical-issues-and-softfoot-problems-with-motion-amplification/): Was surprised to see the motor dipping down to the right side from the MA footage. Looks like a softfoot problem and probably the root cause of the high 100Hz vibration due to the motor twisting. All other feet secure. Further checks to be carried out when offline to confirm and correct." — Stuart Walker - [Identifying and Fixing Resonance Problems in Cooling Water Pumps](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/identifying-and-fixing-resonance-problems-in-cooling-water-pumps/): "Interesting problem picked up during a new routine vibration survey. We noticed raised vibration levels at 1xRPM on a cooling water pump, around 12mm/sec RMS. Classic rotating looseness problem on a critical fan. Worn coupling is the root cause in this case." — Stuart Walker - [Confirming HVAC Fan Balance Issues with Multiple Technologies](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/confirming-hvac-fan-balance-issues-with-multiple-technologies/): "A nice recent example where I used multiple technologies to confirm I had a balance problem and not another issue. It was an HVAC fan showing increasing levels at 1XRPM, but with remote access only. I had two accels on the fan, and as we know, not all 1XRPM problems are unbalance! This fan has corrosion issues due to its age, so I wanted to ensure it wasn’t a structural problem causing the increase. - [Utilising PeakVue Stress Wave Technology for Vibration Analysis](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/utilising-peakvue-stress-wave-technology-for-vibration-analysis/): "I have been using PeakVue stress wave technology for well over 20 years now—feeling old! It's great for larger structures and machines too. By filtering the MA videos to different frequencies, we can gain a much deeper understanding of the machine's motion. - [Tackling Resonance Issues in Variable Speed Drive Systems](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/tackling-resonance-issues-in-variable-speed-drive-systems/): "Resonance issues are a big problem in industry, especially as more drives are converted to variable speed, making this problem more likely to occur. Often seen at 1X of the machine but not always. - [Importance of Proper Sensor Placement in Vibration Analysis](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/importance-of-proper-sensor-placement-in-vibration-analysis/): "One of the first elements you learn about in vibration analysis is how to collect quality data through correct sensor location and mounting. I am seeing a worrying trend of wireless sensors being placed in the middle of sizeable motors and machines, hoping to pick up bearing defects and lubrication issues at the DE and NDE many feet away. Good luck with that! - [Diagnosing Severe Vibration Issues in a High-Speed Fan](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/diagnosing-severe-vibration-issues-in-a-high-speed-fan/): "Probably one of the worst fans I have ever measured with levels well over 100mm/sec! It should be around 1-2mm/sec. This Motion Amplification footage is slowed down and is only 9 seconds in real-time. It shows the fan ramping up to full speed at 2980 RPM. Note the NDE bearing becoming loose due to the severe vibration levels, leading to gas seal failure. - [Real-Time Vibration Reduction with Live Motion Amplification](https://rms-reliability.com/portfolio-item/real-time-vibration-reduction-with-live-motion-amplification/): "Here is the live Motion Amplification video I mentioned yesterday on the pipework problem. Here we are applying a temporary stiffening brace while I film using the IRIS M Camera in LIVE amplification mode (V3.0). ## Categories - [Wireless Sensors](https://rms-reliability.com/category/wireless-sensors/) ## Product categories - [Sensors](https://rms-reliability.com/product-category/sensors/) - [Infrared Thermography](https://rms-reliability.com/product-category/infrared/) ## Portfolio Categories
