“Over the last few years, there has been a big trend in converting previously fixed-speed machines to variable speed. This is great for process control and possible energy savings, but what is often overlooked is the possibility of resonance problems. Unless the machine is perfectly balanced or aligned, the 1XRPM (or other frequencies) can easily excite natural frequencies on the machine, leading to excessive vibration levels and premature failures.

Here is a great before & after Motion Amplification example of this type of problem. The solution was to increase the natural frequency of the base by stiffening it and precision aligning the pump. Levels dropped from 17mm/sec to 0.5mm/sec RMS—a 95% reduction. Great proactive work by one of our regular sites we work with.” — Stuart Walker
