Who should attend

This course is designed for individuals who want to develop the skills necessary to effectively use thermal imaging camera equipment for collecting data. The focus is on setting up and operating the equipment safely, and verifying the calibration of thermographic measurement systems. This will help ensure that the data collected is accurate and reliable.

In addition to setting up and operating the equipment, the course also covers techniques for identifying and mitigating potential sources of error in the data collection process. This includes steps to prevent and minimize the impact of poor data acquisition, as well as best practices for applying specified thermographic measurement techniques. Finally, the course teaches how to evaluate and report test results, with an emphasis on highlighting areas of concern and making recommendations for improvement.

The CAT I Infrared Thermography course is also suitable for reliability engineers, PdM program managers, and other maintenance staff who would like to understand condition monitoring with a focus on thermography, and take the ISO or ASNT exam.

Course description

The CAT I Infrared Thermography Certification Training is an opportunity to work with and learn from some of the world’s most experienced Infrared trainers and inspectors.

The course is an essential mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Working from the Level 1 course guide, students are exposed to infrared thermography and how it is applied to the inspection disciplines demanded by an effective thermographic program.

In accordance with ISO 18436-7 standard there is a mixture of classroom training and practical exercises with an optional 2-hour Certification exam.

Are you ready to get started in infrared thermography and condition monitoring? You will enjoy this thermography training course!

You will come away with a solid understanding of why we monitor the condition of rotating machinery (and other critical assets), the importance of improved reliability, and how the infrared thermography can be successfully measured and analysed to provide an early warning of a wide range of fault conditions. You won’t come away as an expert; that’s what our more advanced courses are for. But you will know enough to make a valuable contribution to an existing program; be in a position to start a new program; determine if you should implement a program at your site; or better understand the program that exists in your plant.

Aim

You will come away from the course with a solid understanding of:

  1. Set up and operate thermal imaging equipment for safe thermographic data collection
  2. Verify the calibration of thermographic measurement systems
  3. Identify, prevent, minimize, and control poor data acquisition and error sources
  4. Apply a specified thermographic measurement technique
  5. Evaluate and report test results and highlight areas of concern

Conditions and Requirements

Candidates must provide evidence of a minimum of 12 months’ practical work experience in the field of infrared thermography condition monitoring and diagnostics.

Candidates must also provide evidence of passing the Ishihara color perception test conducted by a licensed professional.

“MIBoC uses the Ishihara Color Perception Test, also known as the color vision test to measure a person’s ability to tell the difference between colours. Ishihara test checks for red-green colour blindness. In an Ishihara test, a person looks at a series of circles (known as Ishihara plates) with dots of different colors and sizes. A person who has trouble seeing red and green will find the shapes and numbers hard to see, or may not see them at all.”

Candidates must complete the training course, have the experience, provide evidence of the Ishihara tests, and pass the certification exam with a score of 75% or more to be certified for CAT I Infrared Thermography by MIBoC *

* Certification Exam is provided by Mobius Institute Board of Certification (MIBoC) which is ISO 18436-1, ISO/IEC 17024 accredited in accordance with ISO 18436-7

Remarks

  • The course and exam will be delivered in English.
  • Maximum attendees for this event, 20.
  • In-house training is also possible for a class size of minimum 6 attendees.
  • Registration of candidates requires processing by Mobius, so you are requested to confirm your booking.

Who should attend?

If you have been performing infrared thermography for one year, or if you have been collecting thermographic readings and leaving the analysis to another person, then this course is for you. The CAT I Infrared Thermography course is also designed for reliability engineers, PdM program managers, and other maintenance staff who would like to understand condition monitoring with a focus on thermography, and take the ISO or ASNT exam.

What is unique about this course?

RMS makes it unique. We use 3D animations, Flash simulations, and numerous software simulators that completely demystify the analysis. While infrared thermography training courses have traditionally been very theoretical, difficult to understand, (and boring), you will be captivated by the Mobius Training methods, and you will enjoy our practical approach. You will take away skills that you can immediately apply to your job, and you will truly understand what you are doing. When senior infrared thermography analysts attend our classes they often say “if only I could have learned this way when I got started” – well, now you can!

Additional benefits unique to RMS / Mobius Institute courses

Classroom activities

  • Sitting and watching an instructor can be boring… When the instructor is using modern slides, 3D animations, and incredible simulators, there is no way that you will be bored, however there is nothing like hands-on participation.

Hands-on participation accelerates learning and enjoyment (depends on venue)

  • In the Mobius Institute courses you can use the simulators, and you can collect readings and study real thermographic patterns. There is no doubt that the simulators make it easier to understand the topics we cover – but when you can use them yourself, the learning is further accelerated.

Workbooks provide feedback – do you really understand?

  • We also provide quiz questions that help you check if you really did understand the topics, and that you will be able to make the right decisions in the field (and in the exam). Every morning we have a lively discussion as we go through the questions.

Take away more than just knowledge

  • We don’t just deliver an excellent course. We provide you with resources that you can use before, during and after the course.

Get started before the course even starts

  • Before you even start the course you can visit our Learning Zone Web site to take the self-paced lessons (and read through the manual). These lessons will help prepare you for the course – you will learn so much more if you go into the course with this knowledge.

Excellent materials that you will treasure forever

  • During the course you receive a bearing analysis chart, an Infrared Thermography reference guide, (a very handy booklet); a mouse pad that is covered with classic spectra representing common fault conditions; access to quiz styled questions and answers, and our Infrared Thermography CAT I manual. This new manual is easy to read, is filled with illustrations, follows the course slides exactly, contains an excellent “Equipment Knowledge” appendix, and can be used as a reference in the future.

Don’t stop learning just because the course ends

  • For six months after the course (or longer for a small fee), you can continue to access the self-paced material on the Web site. If you forget something that you were taught, or you just want a refresher, then just jump on to the site and go through the fully narrated lessons.

Distance learning benefits

If the high cost of travel and accommodation, and the time away from your family and work has stopped you from receiving the training that you need, then you should consider our distance learning courses.

At a time that is convenient to you, and at a pace that works best for you, you can take our lessons and learn in a very similar way to attendees of our classroom courses. Depending upon the course, you can either view fully narrated slides, or you can watch a video of the class in action.

Narrated slides

Utilizing the popular iLearnVibration and iLearnAlignment products, we offer distance learning courses where you can view the lessons at your own page, in your own time, and get assistance from an instructor when any questions arise. Of course, you can just buy the products and learn at your own pace without assistance, but you are sure to benefit from interaction with the instructor. In certain courses, you can also interact with other students.

Video lessons

These are not noisy, unprofessional videos taken from actual classrooms, each video was carefully created and edited so that you receive the full benefit. As you can see in this sample, you see the instructor talking and you see the slides (and simulators) being used in high resolution. All you need is a good Internet connection and a good monitor (1024×768 or better) and you will be ready to start learning. You can pause and rewind the video so that you can see and hear the instructor cover the topic again.

In addition to the lessons, hands-on videos are presented where a variety of thermal imaging cameras are used to perform a range of tests. You can also perform activities defined by the instructor, and take quizzes that will be reviewed by the instructor.

This is a great way to learn. The convenience of learning from home, and the reduced costs associated with travel, meals and accommodation make this a very attractive option – especially while the world’s economy is still recovering.

There’s a lot to learn on the CAT I Infrared Thermography course! Our instructor did an excellent job of bring the course to life. I’m already looking forward to joining the CAT II course when available.
