Wireless Sensor Technology
Taking a CBM approach to sensor management
To get the most out of wireless sensor technology it is so important that the application fits the sensor capability. Critical assets and the balance of plant equipment such as fans, pumps, motors, blowers, gearboxes are ideal candidates for the wireless sensor technology.
“These systems need managing to get the most out of them – it’s not just a case of throwing lots of wireless sensors on plant and walking away!” – Stuart Walker
A key benefit for using wireless sensor technology is that there is a large time saving on resource in collecting the data, as this is done automatically by the system. Another key benefit is that instead of monthly data collection, typical in tradition portable vibration monitoring, we have data from many different parameters every minute, which is close to real time monitoring.
With this data we get a much more detailed understanding as to what is happening on the machine on a day-to-day basis. We can see clearly how a machine reacts to load, speed and production processes, which can effect the machine vibration and temperature. Defects are detected earlier to improve maintenance planning – lubrication problems are a good example of this, and can be highlighted quickly and acted upon promptly, to reduce the chance of a machinery failure. See our Kappa X and Tau case studies for real world examples.
Choosing the right tools for the job
“It’s not something new, but something often overlooked when new shiny technology becomes available and more affordable. The job of creating a solution fit for purpose still remains of key importance. That’s how the trusted team at RMS can help!” – Steven Whittle
RMS are pleased to invite commercial enquiries for two Wireless Sensor solutions: Sensoteq and Emerson. To meet the growing interest of UK organisations, RMS teamed up with Sensoteq in late 2019 to support the development of the Kappa X Wireless Vibration Sensor and Analytix platform to provide a fit for purpose affordable cloud based wireless solution for its growing client base. RMS also supports interest from the UK and Ireland for the complete suite of AMS remote monitoring solutions which integrate into existing Emerson platforms and DCS systems.
“We have successfully resolved problems much earlier by using the Kappa X Wireless Vibration Sensor. The Team at RMS are experts in CBM practices, and sensors are part of our future journey.” – Condition Monitoring Engineer, Food Processing Plant

Wireless Sensor Analysis
Making more accurate, better-timed decisions is what changes the game
Managers
Traffic Light System – Map View
– Scheduled Reports
Use a simple traffic light system to show only the advanced information you need – green is fine, yellow needs your attention, red needs a quick response. Information can be displayed on a map view and in your maintenance office. Create weekly or monthly reports showing your underperforming machines – use it to plan your maintenance team. Best of all, you don’t have to keep an eye on the system, it will notify you via email or text message when something changes.
Vibration Analyst
Time Waveforms & Spectrums – Auto-Correclation & Circular Plots – Bearing Frequency Database
Using a state-of-the-art user interface allows the vibration analyst to get the detailed data needed. Check stock frequencies, use cursors and check long trend graphs. With a full-featured toolset, combined with quick navigation, comparison and reporting tools, the analyst find can rely on the interface for diagnosing machine failures. Having access to timely, quality machine health data dramatically enhances the capabilities of the vibration analyst.
Maintenance Technician
Logical View of Machines – Compare Similar Machines – Alarm Score
As a maintenance technician, you need to know what’s going on with your machine, but you don’t need to be a vibration expert to diagnose problems. By setting the machine type, the system will choose the best alert level for you. Going a step further by comparing data from similar machines, this can reveal bad actors. Listen to your machine by playing the time waveform. Viewing the alarm values can give you an overview of your machine’s history – as values get higher, the machine’s health deteriorates.
